The other day we mentioned that our heart-shaped papel picado reminded us of valentines… which got us thinking. Why not turn them into valentines? We grabbed some scissors, glue, and colorful paper, and the result was even cuter (and easier to do) than we’d hoped!
Our small papel picado is the perfect size for this project; each panel matches up with a standard size piece of construction paper or cardstock. Choose your favorite (there are 6 designs to choose from, and we’re pretty sure you can’t go wrong with any of them) and cut it off the string. Then, carefully trim off the top part, until you’re left with only a heart shape. Believe it or not, that’s the hardest part!
Pick the color of your background paper – we went with hot pink and a deeper purple for our first attempts. Carefully glue the heart onto your paper or cardstock; the tissue paper is thin and delicate, so it may rip, but as long as you go slowly, you should be able to fix any tears with a little extra glue.
You can cut off the ends so you’re just left with a square, or you can go one step further and follow along the scalloped edges to just leave the heart shape. You’ll end up with a wonderfully unique valentine! Write a sweet message on the back for your loved one, or hang it up for a lovely decoration. And once you see how easy it is you’ll want to do it again and again; pick other designs and colors for a wonderfully festive collection of valentines.
